Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there cellphone coverage and WiFi internet on site?

  • WiFi Internet: Yes, WiFi internet is available for free at the ECOLODGE.
  • Cellphone Coverage: Cellphone coverage is not available directly at our site. However, you can find coverage approximately a 10-minute walk from the ECOLODGE.

 What about mosquitoes and malaria?

Due to our elevation (about 450 meters above sea level), we have very few mosquitoes. We are not in a malaria or yellow fever risk region. Given the toxicity of anti-malaria pills, we recommend carefully considering whether to take them in our low-risk area.

Is private transport included in the price?

Private or shared transport from Quito/airport is available for an additional fee. Details and options are specified in the event registration form, where you can indicate your transportation needs.

What are the group sizes?

The maximum number of participants for the group retreat and ceremonies is 12. Typically, group sizes range from 1 to 4 people. This ensures a highly personalized experience, with individual attention from the shaman, including a private cleansing session (15-30 minutes) and a sharing session the next day. An English-speaking trained facilitator is available for support before and after the ceremony.

Can I participate in the retreat without drinking Ayahuasca?

Yes, you can participate in the retreat even if you choose not to drink Ayahuasca. In Kichwa culture, it is common for native people to attend healing ceremonies where only the shaman drinks Ayahuasca. Many participants may not be ready or suited to drink it. The shaman uses Ayahuasca to connect with the spirits and perform cleansing rituals. You can still be present in the ceremony, experience the energy of the circle, and receive a personal cleansing ritual from the shaman.

Are you close to a hospital in case of an emergency?

In case of an emergency, it takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the nearest medical center in Puerto Misahuallí, or 45 minutes to the modern hospital in Tena (upgraded in 2019). A truck is always ready at the center during ceremonies. We have not had any emergencies since our foundation in 1998. The center is equipped with first aid kits and has a certified first aid provider on-site if needed.

Are our shamans certified?

At Ayahuasca Ecuador, we work with both certified and non-certified shamans, including leaders of ASHIN (Association of Indigenous Shamans of Napo Province) and CYRAE (Advisory Board of the Shamans of the Ecuadorian Amazon). While certifications exist, only a small percentage of Amazonian shamans are formally licensed. Certification alone does not guarantee quality; some excellent shamans lack formal licenses, while some licensed shamans may not always practice ethically.

We do not require formal licenses but focus on ethical conduct and proven skill. Our shamans are carefully selected based on their ceremonial expertise, shamanic power, and ability to guide and support participants. They are deeply rooted in indigenous traditions, trained by elders, and integrated into our community. Their exceptional abilities and dedication make them among the most sought-after shamans in Ecuador.

Our Story

Since 1998, Ayahuasca Ecuador has been offering exclusive, safe, and authentic retreats to experience the healing power of the mother of medicinal plants. Our retreats are held at Suchipakari Amazon Lodge, which provides the perfect location for these ceremonies.

Immerse yourself in a journey of self-discovery and nature connection with our Ayahuasca ceremonies, led by our Kichwa Shaman amidst the untouched beauty of the Amazon rainforest.

Our Vision

The wise Amazon holds many secrets that are still difficult for humans to comprehend. Ayahuasca came to transform us, changing the way we think and who we are. Most importantly, it teaches us to value ourselves and the environment around us. This is why it is called the Mother of Plants; it guides us to become better beings every day. We want to share this wisdom to raise awareness about respecting nature and the diverse forms of life that exist here.

Our Team

Ayahuasca Ecuador represents the Kichwa nationality of Alto Napo, dedicated to sharing and preserving their ancestral traditions to improve their quality of life. We achieve this through the strengthening and promotion of community development programs, the revaluation of various Amazonian peoples, and the communal defense of the environment and natural resources.

Join us for an unforgettable experience of self-exploration and communion with nature, led by our Kichwa Shaman in transformative Ayahuasca ceremonies within the Amazon rainforest.

Here are some tips for participating in an Ayahuasca ceremony:

  1. Prepare Mentally and Emotionally: Approach the ceremony with an open mind and heart. Set your intentions and be willing to confront any emotions or experiences that may arise.
  2. Follow the Pre-Ceremony Diet: Most ceremonies require adhering to a special diet for several days beforehand. This typically involves avoiding certain foods and substances like alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water leading up to the ceremony to stay hydrated. However, avoid drinking large amounts of water during the ceremony itself, as it can interfere with the effects of Ayahuasca.
  4. Respect the Shaman and Ceremony Space: Show reverence to the shaman leading the ceremony and the sacred space where it takes place. Follow any guidelines or instructions provided by the facilitators.
  5. Set Intentions: Before drinking Ayahuasca, take time to reflect on your intentions for the ceremony. What do you hope to gain or learn? Keep these intentions in mind throughout the experience.
  6. Trust the Process: Ayahuasca can bring up intense emotions and experiences. Trust in the wisdom of the medicine and allow yourself to surrender to the journey, even if it feels challenging at times.
  7. Stay Present and Grounded: Focus on your breath and try to stay present during the ceremony. If you start to feel overwhelmed, connect with the ground beneath you or engage in grounding techniques like deep breathing or visualization.
  8. Respect Others’ Experiences: Everyone's journey with Ayahuasca is unique. Avoid judging or comparing your experience to others'. Offer support and compassion to fellow participants if needed.
  9. Stay for Integration: After the ceremony, take time to integrate your experience. Journaling, meditation, or talking with others can help process and make sense of what you've experienced.
  10. Self-Care: Be gentle with yourself in the days following the ceremony. Get plenty of rest, nourish your body with healthy foods, and engage in activities that promote relaxation and self-care.

Remember, participating in an Ayahuasca ceremony can be a profound and deeply transformative experience, but it's important to approach it with respect, mindfulness, and preparation.
